Creativity Pioneer #1: Walt Disney

Walt Disney and Mickey MouseWhen proving the point of how important creativity, or idea generation, is, two pioneers come quickly to mind.

No one can dispute the “imagineering” genius of Walt Disney. His genius lives on today in the smiles we see on the faces of little children as they race through his parks. Like we heard one little boy say when he first saw Walt Disney World’s castle, “It’s a miracle!”

My partner, John Alexander, and I believe that Disney has a “cute” department whose sole purpose is to make their characters . . . cute.

But the important thing you need to know about Walt Disney is how he handled his idea people. He would take them into a special room to generate ideas. He didn’t allow any “nay sayers” in this room. You weren’t allowed to say, “That idea is too expensive,” or “That idea just won’t work.” “No” or “can’t” wasn’t allowed. Only positive ideas were allowed to flow. These were right brain incredibly creative people.

One idea was bounced off another until their creative juices were overflowing. If you’ve ever been in a brainstorming session like this, the electricity in the room is totally amazing. You can literally feel it. We do these sessions in our Search Engine Workshops and in our chats at the Workshop Resource Center. We’ll talk about idea creation in this blog more as time goes on.

Anyway, after the idea had been formed, it was taken to the second room where the left brainers went about the task of putting the idea into a reality. How much will it cost? Will it fit in the location where it’s meant to go? How long will it take to build? Is it feasible, or even possible, to build it? Will some major or minor adjustments need to be made?

You can do the same thing when it comes to content ideas for your own Web site by brainstorming with business associates, friends, or family members. We’ll brainstorm here at the Idea Motivator Web site too.

You may get to where you can brainstorm by yourself. I’ll give you all kinds of tips on how to think creatively. That’s what I’m here for.

Now, on to the next creativity pioneer . . . Google.

Robin

[…] Join in this session with me as we brainstorm for content for a site that sells fishing equipment. Understand that I am not a fisherwoman! So some of my ideas may be a little crazy. Does that matter? No. Remember that no ideas are wrong. This is room #1. Write down any ideas you have. All ideas are good. We’re brainstorming for as many ideas as we can come up with. Get as creative as you can. […]
